What Gemini Notebook changes—and what it does not

The July announcement changes the product name and expands its place in Google’s ecosystem. The core source-grounded notebook concept remains.

Practical impact

What the address change actually breaks

The redirect protects ordinary browsing. It does not protect anything that hard-codes the old hostname.

If something stopped working in late July and you changed nothing, this is the first thing to check. The rename on July 16 was cosmetic for integrations. The address move was not.

Keeps working

  • Bookmarks and pinned tabs pointing at the old address.
  • Shared notebook links you sent to other people.
  • The mobile apps, after a normal app update.
  • Workspace access. Google stated no admin action is required.

Can break

  • Browser extensions that match on the old hostname. Several needed an update before they worked again.
  • Scripts and automation tools with a hard-coded host allowlist. Login flows time out because the browser lands on a host the tool does not recognise.
  • Corporate proxy or firewall rules written against notebooklm.google.com.
  • Anything that inspects the URL to decide whether a page is a notebook.
One habit worth keeping either way: reach the app by typing the address yourself or from your own bookmark, and check that the address bar reads notebook.google.com or notebooklm.google.com. A rename plus an address change is exactly the moment phishing pages find easy targets.
Disambiguation

Three places called notebooks, and which one you want

The naming is genuinely confusing right now. Google has notebooks in three surfaces, and two of them arrived within months of each other.

Gemini Notebook

The standalone research app, called NotebookLM until July 16. Lives at notebook.google.com. This is where Studio outputs and the deepest feature set are. For research work, this is the one you want.

Notebooks in the Gemini app

A section inside the Gemini app for organising chats and files, launched in April 2026 as a separate feature. The notebooks themselves sync across both surfaces, but the feature sets are not identical.

Notebooks in AI Mode in Search

Google began rolling this surface out on August 19, 2026. Existing notebooks from Gemini Notebook and the Gemini app appear in Search and sync their sources and instructions; rollout started in English across more than 180 countries, excluding the EEA.

June vs. July 2026

Why the June and July NotebookLM updates get merged

Much of the coverage attributes the cloud computer, the new models and the code execution capability to the July 16 rename. They are not from that post.

Those capabilities shipped on June 8, 2026, in a separate official post published while the product still carried the NotebookLM name. The July 16 post announced the rename.

The two got folded together because Google updated the June post’s modification timestamp at the moment of the rename. A reader arriving later sees one recently-modified page describing both, which is why so much secondary coverage treats a June feature release as a July one.

Why it matters for you: if you are checking whether your account has a capability, the date you need is June 8 and the eligibility line is Ultra and eligible Workspace business accounts first, with Pro web access following. The rename date tells you nothing about access.

What changed in NotebookLM in August 2026?

Google expanded Classroom-to-Gemini-Notebook workflows on August 4, added automated notebook-source updates through Workspace Studio on August 7, made full notebook copying available on August 17, and began rolling notebooks into AI Mode in Search on August 19.

What is notebook.google.com?

It is Gemini Notebook, the standalone research app formerly called NotebookLM. The old notebooklm.google.com hostname now redirects there, and Google Cloud documentation lists notebook.google.com as the personal Gemini Notebook interface. Google did not publish a consumer-facing release note establishing an exact migration day.

Did notebooklm.google.com stop working?

No. It redirects to notebook.google.com. Existing bookmarks, shared notebook links and pinned tabs continue to work through the redirect.

Why did my NotebookLM extension or script stop working in late July?

Most likely the address change. Browser extensions and automation tools that match on the old hostname stop recognising the app when the browser lands on notebook.google.com. Extensions needed an update; scripts need the new host added to their allowlist.

Is Gemini Notebook the same as Notebooks in the Gemini app?

No. Gemini Notebook is the standalone research app at notebook.google.com with the full feature set. Notebooks in the Gemini app is a separate section launched in April 2026 for organising chats and files. The notebooks sync across both, but the feature sets differ. A third surface, notebooks in AI Mode in Search, began rolling out on August 19, 2026, with sources and notebook instructions syncing across Google products.

Did the rename add code execution?

No. The secure cloud computer, the model upgrade and native code execution shipped on June 8, 2026, in a separate announcement made while the product was still called NotebookLM. The July 16 post announced the rename only. Google later updated the June post's timestamp, which is why the two are often reported as one release.

What is the latest NotebookLM update in 2026?

The newest notebook-related Google announcement tracked here is the August 19, 2026 rollout of notebooks in AI Mode in Search. The latest standalone Gemini Notebook feature is August 17 full-notebook copying, including eligible sources and Studio artifacts.

Is NotebookLM being discontinued?

No. Google says the standalone product continues under the Gemini Notebook name. Existing links are redirected, and the transition is rolling out across interfaces over several weeks.

Who can use native code execution in Gemini Notebook?

Google confirmed access for Google AI Ultra users and eligible Workspace business customers. Google also said web access for Pro users would roll out over the following weeks, so availability should be checked in the product.
