Flashcards auto-generates question-and-answer study cards from your uploaded sources. Every card is grounded in your actual documents with citations, so you're studying verified information rather than AI-generated guesses. Customize by number of questions, difficulty level, and topic focus. Then export to Anki, Quizlet, or any spaced repetition system for long-term retention.
The Flashcards feature extracts key concepts, definitions, relationships, and facts from your sources and converts them into question-answer pairs. Unlike AI-generated flashcards from tools like ChatGPT (which might hallucinate facts), NotebookLM's flashcards are grounded in your specific documents — each answer traces back to a citation in your uploaded material. This is the critical difference: you're studying what your sources actually say, not what an AI thinks the answer should be.
The feature lets you customize generation: specify the number of cards, difficulty level (basic recall, conceptual understanding, or application), and which topics or sections to focus on. A medical student uploading a pharmacology textbook can generate 50 flashcards focused on drug interactions at an advanced difficulty level. A history student can generate 20 basic recall cards covering key dates and figures from uploaded lecture notes.
The educational science behind flashcards — active recall and spaced repetition — is among the most robustly supported learning strategies in cognitive psychology. The challenge has always been the time investment: creating high-quality flashcards manually takes hours. NotebookLM reduces that to seconds, shifting your time from card creation to actual studying.
Exam preparation is the obvious use case, but the feature extends well beyond students. Professional certifications — PMP, CFA, AWS, medical boards — involve memorizing large amounts of structured information that's perfect for flashcard review. New employee onboarding benefits from flashcards generated from company documentation, processes, and product specs.
A less obvious but powerful use case is research retention. After reading a paper, generate flashcards from it. Review those cards periodically and you'll retain the key findings months later — solving the "I read that paper but I can't remember what it said" problem that plagues every researcher.
Flashcards are most effective for factual and conceptual knowledge — they're less suited for procedural skills or creative application. The auto-generated cards sometimes focus on surface-level facts rather than deep conceptual relationships; using the chat to pre-filter important concepts before generating cards helps. Cards don't export directly to Anki format — you'll need to copy them or use a third-party converter.
Add the documents you want to study — textbooks, lecture notes, papers, training manuals. For focused card sets, select specific sources rather than using everything in the notebook.
Click the Flashcards tile in the Studio panel. You'll see options for customizing the card generation.
Choose: number of cards (10–50+), difficulty level (basic, intermediate, advanced), and topic focus. Use the prompt field to specify: 'Focus on drug interactions and contraindications' or 'Only cover chapters 4–6.'
Click Generate. Cards appear in seconds. Review each card: is the question clear? Is the answer accurate? Are important concepts covered? Flag any cards that are too easy, too hard, or off-topic.
Flip through cards. For each, try to answer from memory before revealing the answer. Click the citation to review the original source passage if you're unsure or want deeper context.
Copy Q&A pairs into Anki, Quizlet, or your preferred spaced repetition tool. For Anki, format as 'Question [tab] Answer' — one pair per line. Schedule reviews following spaced repetition intervals for maximum retention.
